A Tale of Two Seeds – part 1
The Gospel
first preached, the “two seeds” first prophesied:
|
Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: field; On your belly you shall go, 15 And I will put enmity Seed; He shall bruise your head, |
“I will put enmity .
. .” --- God promises to sanctify the woman and her Seed, graciously removing
her allegiance to Satan, and therefore restoring her and her descendants to
peace and fellowship with God. Two lines of
descendants are promised: the seed of
the serpent, and the seed of the woman. Christ is “her Seed”. This prophecy is ultimately about the coming Messiah who will defeat Satan (bruise the head of the serpent) by Himself taking punishment for our sins (His heel bruised by the serpent). |
Now, in Genesis 4-5, we get to see the “two seeds”, the two prominent lines of descendants from Eve:
|
The Seed of the Serpent: Genesis 4: 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and
she conceived and bore Cain 8 Now Cain talked
with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that
Cain rose up against Abel his brother
and killed him. |
|
The Seed of the Woman: Genesis 4: 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore
a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me
instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was
born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name
of the LORD. |
|
16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the
LORD and dwelt in the |
|
Genesis 5: 3 And Adam . . . begot a son in his own likeness,
after his image, and named him Seth. 6 Seth . . . begot Enosh. 9 Enosh . . . begot Cainan. 12 Cainan . . .
begot Mahalalel. 15 Mahalalel . . .
Jared. 18 Jared . . . begot Enoch. 21 Enoch . . . begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and
daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three
hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was
not, for God took him. 25 Methuselah . . . begot Lamech.
28 Lamech . . . had
a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our
work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has
cursed.” 32 And Noah . . . begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth. |
Summary of the “two seeds” in
Genesis 4-5:
|
The Seed of the Serpent: Cain – murderer Lamech – polygamist and murderer * No one in Cain’s line is said
to be a follower of God or pleasing to God. |
|
The Seed of the Woman: Abel – one who pleased
God Seth – The new seed of the
woman; God gave him to replace Abel Enosh – associated with men calling upon God Enoch – walked with God for 300 years, and then was
translated, without dying Noah – righteous in God’s
sight Shem – blessed of God – ancestor to Abraham &
ultimately to Jesus * None of the woman’s seed, from Seth to Noah, are
said to be displeasing to God. |
